What Can Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Help With?

Everyone has a slightly different set of issues, and everyone’s needs are different. We understand that mental health treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and ketamine assisted psychotherapy can be helpful with a wide variety of mental health issues. Utilizing this approach can be very successful in treating many mental health-related disorders.  A few examples include:

  • PTSD: PTSD stands for post-traumatic stress disorder. If you have had a traumatic experience, ketamine infusions might be helpful. Some of the most common causes of PTSD include medical trauma, serving in the military, sexual assault, child abuse, a career in healthcare, domestic violence, death of a loved one, child abandonment, witnessing a crime, natural disasters, public violence, miscarriages, racism, gang-related violence, et cetera. A combination of psychotherapy and ketamine can be a significant resource in processing these different processes.
  • Anxiety: People who suffer from anxiety may also benefit from ketamine infusions. Some people have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, while other people might suffer from frequent panic attacks. Anxiety can present in many different ways such as panic attacks, severe phobia of social interactions, repetitive thoughts about past trauma, consistently feeling on edge or walking on eggshells, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, consistent feeling of doom, and so on. If you have anxiety concerns, ketamine infusions combined with psychotherapy could be beneficial for you.
  • Depression: Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek out help. Many people do not find relief in traditional medication alone, and many of these medications have significant side effects. Often traditional medications used to treat depression will take up to three weeks to see results, and many patients need immediate intervention. Ketamine assisted psychotherapy can be an effective option to help these people have quicker results and prevent the negative side effects of increasing medications. Ketamine infusions combined with psychotherapy can give people an effective alternative when many other options have failed. Ketamine assisted psychotherapy can help many people manage symptoms and improve their overall quality of life.
  • Chronic Pain: Ketamine can be beneficial for people who suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain can make it difficult for people to go to work, keep up with school, or even get out of bed in the morning. If chronic pain is impacting your quality of life, talk to us about ketamine infusions.

These are just a few of the many conditions that can be addressed with ketamine infusions. Ketamine assisted psychotherapy at Ballen Medical & Wellness can be beneficial for a wide range of concerns, and it would be our pleasure to work with you to develop a treatment plan that works best for your needs.

How Does the Treatment Process Work?

At Ballen Medical & Wellness, we have several steps in our treatment process that we use to maximize the benefits of this service. We start our program with an initial psychiatric consultation to see if you are a candidate for ketamine infusions, our team will create a plan that includes your current medications and symptoms along with ensuring that ketamine assisted psychotherapy could be a safe option for you. Patients can also begin the process by meeting with a psychotherapist to determine if ketamine would be a good addition to their healing process, and what the best approach to treatment should be. We can see if there is a specific set of issues or prior history of trauma for which ketamine might be helpful.

Typically, we recommend one or two sessions of psychotherapy prior to the start of ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Our goal is to target specific issues for which the ketamine treatment could be beneficial. Along with this, we will create intentions, set and setting, and overall goals for the treatment process. When people set a targeted treatment approach, it places them in the best position to recover.

If we believe you are a candidate for ketamine assisted psychotherapy infusions, we will begin by answering any questions or concerns, and then you will meet the care team and guide us in creating the most effective plan. Often patients will start with six to nine ketamine infusions within a two-week period. Psychotherapy sessions will be the day after a ketamine infusion, or later in the day when you are able to engage with therapy. Most people see maximum results when therapy is continued after they have completed their infusions, this allows you to digest and process the targeted issues that arose during ketamine sessions.

We Can Work With a Wide Range of Patients

Another significant benefit of working with Ballen Medical & Wellness is that we can customize your treatment plan to meet your needs. It would also be our pleasure to do ketamine infusions for patients who may have therapists outside of our clinic. We understand that developing a strong relationship with a therapist is important, and if you have a relationship with someone outside of our clinic, we want you to maintain it.

Prior to the start of ketamine infusions, we will connect with your therapist and determine if they are trained to guide you in this process. Your current therapist can also help us get a better idea of your treatment history and what issues could be targeted during your treatment. If your current therapist is able to be part of the ketamine assisted psychotherapy care plan we will create a collaborative schedule and plan with them. Talk with us to learn more about this treatment option.
